Last Saturday members of the Newport (Salop) & District Male Voice Choir joined forces with members of four other West Midlands male voice choirs to perform at the annual St George’s Day concert at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. The massed choir was under the direction of Robyn Davies, musical director of the Hadley & District Orpheus Male Voice Choir.
This was a variety charity concert in aid of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham MacMillan Nurses, and in addition to the massed choir there were performances by singer Lesley Delo, Bewdley Concert Band, The Black Country Ukelele Band, The Manor Operatic Society, the children of Hillstone Primary School in Birmingham and comedian Malcolm Stent. The concert concluded with the singing of patriotic songs – Jerusalem, Land of Hope & Glory and the like – by all the performers and the audience, and it was apparent from the audience reaction that a fine time was had by all.
This was our second appearance at this event, and the experience of singing at this world renowned venue was certainly one not to be missed.
Our next concert will be at Trinity Church in Wellington Road, Newport, Shropshire on Friday evening, 15 May. This is in aid of Trinity Church.
